The word ‘Judo’ can be translated as ‘the way of gentleness’. For this reason, this unique sport can be seen as a softer martial art since it is characterized by the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. More specifically, the key principle is using one's opponent's strength against him/her as well as adapting well to changing circumstances. This therefore makes it an excellent sport for all ages, shapes and sizes. At Dunbar Grammar it’s been implemented into 5th year core PE with much enthusiasm from the pupils. As a result it has been split into 2, 6 weeks blocks with the first block being an all girls group.
The girls have taken very well to the sport and have progressed through the blocks with much gusto, resulting in them being able to perform various impressive throws as well as simple arm locks and strangles. We hope the girls will carry on with the sport outside of school after this taster and that the further blocks within Dunbar Grammar will be just as successful.
Following on from the growing popularity of the sport within the school, we are looking at plans to start an extracurricular club mainly aimed at the younger years. Here we would also try and incorporate outside clubs so that Judo is also being promoted within East Lothian its self.
