'More People, More Active, More Often'
Active Schools East Lothian is a joint initiative between East Lothian Council and sportscotland as part of the Healthy Living Campaign. The programme was identified as a key element of the Scottish Executive's drive to get more people in Scotland active, a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy.
The main aim of the Active Schools East Lothian is to offer school aged children the motivation and opportunities to adopt active, healthy lifestyles throughout their school years and into adulthood. Active Schools is not just about encouraging more children to take part in sport and exercise. It aims to introduce more physical activity into their daily lives through active travel, play and dance.
'More People, More Active More Often'
The Active Schools team consists of 6 primary and 6 co-ordinators. All primary and secondary schools in East Lothian have a co-ordinator assigned to their school. These co-ordinators are responsible for working in partnership to increase the range of quality opportunities for pupils to become physically active. The programme aims to target:
• All school aged children
• Young women and girls
• Young people from ethnic minorities
• Young people with physical and learning disabilities
East Lothian is the first local authority in Scotland to have full-time primary and secondary co-ordinators. Each primary co-ordinator is in charge of developing programmes for 5 to 7 schools in a cluster. There is a full-time secondary co-ordinator in each High School in East Lothian responsible for developing sport and physical activity. These co-ordinators not only develop extra-curricular programmes but assist with curricular delivery in the form of offering alternative activities or working with smaller groups.
